Luis Vuitton: from the foundation to nowaday

After the last article where we talked about the history of one of the most famous luxury and fashion brand, Gucci, today we are going to tell you the history behind Luis Vuitton brand.

The origins of this brand date back to 1854, it was founded by Luis Vuitton in Paris. Luis Vuitton first arrived in Paris in 1837, when the city wasn’t the world’s fashion capital yet.

In 1859 his shop began to sell hand’s made luggage, in that times they developed the flat-top gray trunk, a symbolic item for the brand.

It has reached quickly a big fame. In 1867 the brand took part to the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the second world fair held in the French capital city.

Four years later the LV founder’s death, the brand introduced in the production line the LV monogram. Initially the monogram was introduced to prevent counterfeiting. Today the LV’s monogram is the most know symbol of the high class. It has the initials of the founder surrounded by geometric shapes; in the future it has changed the geometric shapes with stylized flowers as we all know today.

Many world important people started using LV merch, like Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s that had many Vuitton luggage to travel with.

In 1885 the brand opened his first workshop in London.

After Luis Vuitton’s death his son George took the lead of the company. He started to make his company a worldwide corporation. In 1893 took part to the Chicago World’s Fair showing his products.

In 1913 the brand opened a shop on the Champs-Elysees that at the time was the biggest travel-goods store ever. Today it is still the most known LV store in the world.

In the period after the second World War, the brand started to craft many of their items with leather. At the ends of 1950s the brand renewed his monogram to make it more suitable for almost every product.

The annual revenue at the end of the 70s was almost 15 million dollars. In that years it opened the first shop in Asia, in Japan. In the 80s the brand strengthened its presence in the Asian continent.

In 1987 a union of LV brand, Hennessy and Moët et Chandon created a corporation named LVMH. The brands other LV are well known for champagne and cognac.

In 1998 the new artistic directory of the company, Marc Jacobs, introduced in the product line the first ready-to-wear line of the company.

Simultaneously with its 150th anniversary, in 2004, the brand opened new stores in New York, Johannesburg and Mexico City.

In March 2016 the company hired Virgil Abloh artistic director for men’s wearing line. Abloh is also known because he is the chief executive officer of the Off-White streetwear brand. His debut with Luis Vuitton took place in historical Palais-Royal gardens’ courtyard in Paris, during the 2018 Paris Men’s Fashion Week.

Today Luis Vuitton a worldwide famous brand that in the years became a status symbol and for this reason there are many fake replicas of LV manufactories in the world.
